Ultrasound

Using Sound Waves to Aid in Healing

Unlike diagnostic ultrasounds that provide an image of a baby or injury to a tendon or ligament, the type of ultrasound used as a physical therapy treatment produces a therapeutic deep heat to aid in the healing of connective tissues and the reduction of muscle spasms, joint contractures and swelling. It is contraindicated in patients who are pregnant, or have a fracture or history of cancer, so be sure to tell your therapist if this applies to you.

Phonophoresis

Phonophoresis is a form of ultrasound that aids in the penetration of a prescription dose of hydrocortisone medication and is most often used in tendonitis or arthritic conditions.
